Harrow Crisp pears are a crisp-fleshed pear with golden skin and a light red blush, meant to be eaten firm, juicy, and sweet rather than soft. The name says it plainly: a crisp bite, from the southern Ontario farm town of Harrow. It eats like Bartlett's crunchier cousin, keeping the classic sweet pear flavor in a larger fruit with bright white flesh that stays crisp even when fully ripe.
The firmness makes it the pear for slicing: fan it over salads and cheese boards, where the pieces hold their shape, bake it into tarts that will not collapse, or eat it out of hand like an apple. It arrives with the late summer and fall pear season. It pairs especially well with aged cheddar, arugula, honey, and walnuts.
